Betaloc is a selective β1 receptor antagonist used in the management of hypertension, angina, and heart arrhythmias. The active ingredient found in Betaloc capsules is Metoprolol Tartrate.
Betaloc primarily inhibits beta-adrenoreceptors in the heart and is utilized for treating hypertension, chest pain (angina), irregular heart rhythms, and for the prevention of myocardial infarction. It affects the autonomic nervous system that increases heart rate by blocking certain receptors, thus mitigating excessively rapid heartbeats. Additionally, it reduces myocardial irritability, lowers cardiac output, and has other consequences.
Betaloc should be taken with food or immediately after a meal. Avoid chewing, crushing, or breaking the tablet; instead, swallow it with a full glass of water. The dosage is determined by the specific condition being treated and can range from 100-450 mg daily. Your doctor will prescribe the appropriate individual dosage. Older patients are generally advised to start with a daily dose of 50 mg. Renal failure does not necessitate a dosage adjustment, whereas liver impairment may require the use of different beta-adrenergic blockers that are not metabolized by the liver. If you forget a dose of Betaloc, take it as soon as you recall. If the next dose is less than 4 hours away, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not attempt to make up for a missed dose by taking an extra one. If you experience symptoms such as irregular heartbeats, difficulty breathing, dizziness, weakness, fainting, or bluish nails, seek medical assistance immediately.
With prolonged use of Betaloc, some side effects may emerge, including abdominal cramps, fatigue, insomnia, nausea, depression, memory issues, fever, erectile dysfunction, dizziness, bradycardia, hypotension, cold extremities, sore throat, diarrhea, constipation, and shortness of breath or wheezing.
Store at temperatures between 15-30°C (59-86°F). Keep Betaloc away from moisture and light in a tightly sealed, light-resistant container.
